About Us

Who We Are

to provide targeted and effective aid to the most affected

In 2010, against a backdrop of civil strife and environmental calamities in Somalia, the Global Relief and Development Organization (GRDO) was founded. The inception of GRDO was a direct response to the escalating humanitarian crisis triggered by ongoing civil war and frequent natural disasters in the region. Recognizing the urgent need for intervention, GRDO was established with a clear focus: to provide targeted and effective aid to the most affected populations across Somalia.

Located in Kismayo, a pivotal city in South Central Somalia, our main office serves as the nerve center for our operations. This strategic positioning allows us to effectively coordinate our efforts across various regions, ensuring that our reach extends to even the most remote and afflicted communities. Our presence in Kismayo is not just a logistical choice but also a symbol of our commitment to being at the heart of relief efforts where the need is greatest.

From the outset, GRDO has been grounded in a set of core humanitarian principles. Our mission has always been to deliver aid that is both compassionate and respectful, prioritizing the needs of the most vulnerable, including minority groups, the disabled, and those disproportionately affected by the turmoil in the region. Our approach is characterized by a sensitivity to the diverse needs of these communities, ensuring that our aid not only addresses immediate concerns but also fosters long-term resilience and empowerment.

Our operations and initiatives have been made possible through the robust support of diaspora communities and international donors. The financial contributions and partnerships we’ve forged with these groups have been instrumental in bolstering our capacity to respond effectively to crises. These collaborations bring more than just financial resources; they enrich our organization with a diversity of perspectives and expertise, enhancing our ability to make a sustainable impact.

Our Mission And Vision

Our Mission

Our mission at GRDO is to empower communities in Somalia through a strategy of resilience and tailored project implementation. We recognize that each community has unique challenges and strengths, and our approach is designed to be as adaptable and responsive as possible to these specific needs. Empowerment, in our view, means equipping communities with the tools, knowledge, and resources they need to not only overcome current adversities but to build a foundation for sustainable development.

Our Vision

Our vision is to create a future where human rights are universally respected, and sustainable humanitarian services are accessible to all in Somalia. We aspire to contribute significantly to the socio-economic development of the region, laying the groundwork for a society rooted in peace and justice. This vision goes beyond mere relief efforts; it encompasses a holistic approach to development, aiming to build a foundation where every individual has the opportunity to thrive, free from the constraints of poverty and conflict.

Our Core Values

Freedom

Freedom, especially the ability to make choices about one’s own life, is a fundamental human right that GRDO upholds in all its endeavors.

Solidarity: A United Front for the Vulnerable

Solidarity is at the heart of our work at GRDO. We believe in the power of unity and cooperation, especially in serving the needs of the poor and vulnerable. Our approach is rooted in the understanding that we are stronger together, and that collective action is crucial in addressing the challenges faced by those in dire need. Solidarity for us means standing shoulder to shoulder with the communities we serve, sharing in their struggles, and working collaboratively towards common goals. It’s about creating partnerships that transcend mere aid and foster a sense of shared purpose and mutual support.

Integrity and Credibility: The Cornerstones of Trust

Integrity and credibility are essential to the work we do. Upholding truthfulness and trustworthiness in every aspect of our operations is non-negotiable. We recognize that the effectiveness of our mission hinges on the trust we build with the communities we serve, our partners, and our supporters. Integrity for us means being consistent in our principles, honest in our communications, and ethical in our practices. Credibility is earned by demonstrating our commitment to these values through our actions, ensuring that our work not only meets but exceeds the expectations of those we aim to help.

Transparency and Accountability: Pillars of Responsible Operation

Transparency and accountability are key to maintaining the integrity and effectiveness of our organization. We are committed to operating in an open and responsible manner, ensuring that all our stakeholders – from the communities we assist to our donors and partners – can see and understand how our resources are used. This value is about more than just financial openness; it encompasses a broader commitment to being clear about our goals, processes, and outcomes. We hold ourselves accountable for the impacts of our work, constantly seeking to learn, improve, and adapt in response to the needs of those we serve and the realities of the environments in which we operate.

Tolerance and Acceptance of Difference

We recognize and celebrate the diversity inherent in the human experience. We understand that people vary not only in physical appearance but also in their beliefs, cultures, and life experiences. This diversity enriches our work and the communities we serve.

Equality

Equality is a cornerstone value at GRDO. We believe that every person, regardless of their background, has an intrinsic right to equal opportunities and treatment.
